Kreeger_house

If you are into modern architecture, this is really one of the true hidden gems of Washington, DC.

The Kreeger Museum was previously the Kreeger house -- the residence of David and Carmen Kreeger.  He was the chairman of GEICO, and surely one of the most interesting insurance executives ever, who took true pleasure in so many of the arts.

The house itself is a work of art, designed by noted architect Philip Johnson, and is filled with works by Picasso and Monet, and many others.

You have to look for it, as it is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, but it's definitely worth the trip!

If you are looking for something to do today, try Christmas shopping in Occoquan.  This lovely riverside village is just a few minutes from Alexandria or DC, and is all decked out for the holidays.

Lots of cute shops -- one of our favorites is Elements, which has a wide selection of jewelry and unique gifts.  Lunch at the Garden Kitchen includes a special that includes your choice of pie.  (As always, please tell "Mrs. Greg" that I had the "salad." )

If you go, please come see m at 102 East Colonial Drive, just off Occoquan Road.  This is a lovely townhouse with garage, convenient to everything.  I will be there from 1 to 4pm today (Sunday Dec 4th).  Hope to see you there!

..Benefits DC Area Charities!  If you missed Gingertown, a very cool display of a Gingerbread Las Vegas at Washington Square, you definitely missed a holiday treat.

But you will be pleased to know that the various components of the display have been delivered to a number of Washington-area charities for their holiday enjoyment, including SOME (So Others Might Eat), Martha's Table and the Children's National Medical Center.

Read more about the project here: www.Gingertown.org.

I can't wait to see what they do next year!

Zoolights_square
This is so cool: Creatures great and small, from pandas to mole rats, all created in festive holiday lights. The National Zoo is sparkling with these animal-themed light displays and holiday decorations of every description as part of ZooLights.   And many of the animal buildings are open as well for rare evening viewing.  This is running many nights between now and New Year's, but not every night -- so check the schedule.  The event itself is free -- there is a charge for parking at the Zoo but you may be able to find free or metered parking on nearby Connecticut Avenue.

We went Sunday night and parked a few blocks away on Connecticut Avenue.  Had a very nice dinner and still had room for gingerbread men from the zoo kiosk!

Safeway_georgetown

OK, the "Coolest Safeway in the Area" award has to go to the Georgetown Safeway on Wisconsin Avenue, which describes itself as the first and only LEED certified (green) grocery store in DC.  They have a wide selection of mainstream and specialty foods, as well as a large in-store cafe with several seating areas.  If you are in that area and looking for a cheap lunch, they have lots of prepared items at very reasonable prices.  A big hunk of pizza, plus gelato and a soda ran about $6.50.  Might be the best lunch price in Georgetown, especially if you consider they have parking right in the building.

(If you happen to run into "Mrs. Greg," please leave out the part about the pizza and gelato and tell her I had the "salad.")

Mon, 07 Nov 2011 06:44:00 -0800 Some Wise Advice re: Real Estate http://gregonthetown.com/some-wise-advice-re-real-estate http://gregonthetown.com/some-wise-advice-re-real-estate

This little nugget was passed along by our manager in Old Town Alexandria, Maxine McLeod Miller, and I think it about sums it up:

“To take advantage of this environment, buyers need to set aside the macro and focus on the micro. In other words, the national unemployment rate, the number of foreclosures in the U.S., and tighter underwriting requirements might all be interesting, but they’re not particularly relevant. For potential home buyers what really matters is their own employment status, their personal financial state, and the current conditions in their (local) Virginia housing market.”

Sun, 06 Nov 2011 16:59:00 -0800 A New Look! http://gregonthetown.com/a-new-look http://gregonthetown.com/a-new-look

Lots of real estate signs around the DC area have a new look.  Can you spot it?

Prudential Carruthers Realtors has become Prudential PenFed Realty.  This affiliation with the Pentagon Federal Credit Union opens up additional financing options for our buyers.  For our sellers, the approximately 1,000,000 members of PenFed make up an exciting group of potential purchasers for your home.

More info as we get it -- stay tuned!
